Education and Scholarship

Norman Miller, a prominent local educator and clarinetist with the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra, passed away in 2001. The Norman Miller Memorial Music Scholarship was established in 2002 by the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra, friends and family to aid young musicians in their study of music.

Who May Apply?

The 2018 scholarship is open to woodwind, brass and percussion players attending a two- or four-year institution of higher learning (state, private, or conservatory) within San Luis Obispo County or northern Santa Barbara County. Applicants must be full-time students at the college or university. Applicants need not be majoring in music; however, it is highly desirable that they be pursuing a professional career in music. Applicants must demonstrate exceptional music ability. The winner is expected to perform in the chamber concert set for June 2018.

How to Apply

Applicants may submit to the Scholarship Selection Committee a completed application form along with a one-page statement of past musical experiences and future goals in music, usually in early May of each year. More details, including the application form, will be posted here as the application date approaches. The recipient will be expected to attend a SLO Winds concert after the award. In addition, the scholarship recipient may be asked to play in the San Luis Obispo Wind Orchestra in the following season. This position will be known as the "Norman Miller Chair".
